The provisions implementing the Transparency Pilot for reporting in the Court of Protection have been extended till 30 November 2017.
The pilots were launched in January 2016 and were due to come to an end on 31 August. However the deadline has been extended as it is intended that a package of revisions to the Court of Protection Rules and supporting Practice Directions will be laid before the end of the year and the extension bridges the gap. The number of orders made for deprivation of liberty has almost doubled over the past year, according to the latest court statistics covering January to March 2017. 547 orders were made in that period compared with 292 for the same quarter in 2016. Applications were similarly up, rising 43% to 969. The figures also show that there were 186,169 Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) received, up 31% and 3,399 Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs) in January to March 2017, down 3% on the equivalent quarter in 2016.
